When I press the power button nothing happens.
- Make sure the power cord is plugged in to both the wall and the computer.
- On some power supplies there is an on/off switch. Make sure that is
on.
- Make sure the power cable is correctly connected to the motherboard.
- Make sure the wire from the power switch is correctly connected on
the motherboard.
When I press the power button everything powers up, but I get no video.
- Make sure monitor is powered on and connected to either your video
card or the on-board video connection. (If you have a video card and
on-board video, the monitor must be connected to the video card.)
- Make sure the red switch on the power supply is set to 115, not 230.
- If you have a video card, re-seat the video card.
- Re-seat the RAM or try different RAM.
- Re-seat the CPU.
The green light stays lit on the floppy drive.
- This is normally caused by the floppy cable not being plugged in correctly.
Check the connection at the motherboard and the back of the floppy drive.
- Try a different floppy cable.
The system hangs during POST.
- Unplug all the drives from the motherboard and restart. If the system
finishes POST, plug the drives back in one at a time and see which one
is causing the system to hang.
The fans are louder than normal.
- On occasion a fan will fail and become noisy. Quite a bit of the time
this is caused by dirt buildup on the fan, causing the fan to be out
of balance. Blow your system clean of any dirt; this may help the noise
to go away. You can purchase canned air at most Radio Shack stores.
Should I clean the computer?
- The outside may be washed with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
- There are cleaning discs available for optical drives that will clean
the laser lens.
- Dust and dirt on the inside of the computer and power supply can shorten
the life of the computer. Dust and dirt can hinder cooling which could
possibly shorten the life of the components. Canned air or an air compressor
is a great way to clean the inside of your computer.
The video disappears after the Windows XP splash screen, but it sounds
like the computer is booting up as usual.
- This could possibly caused by someone setting the resolution too high
for the monitor. Restart the computer and enter the computer in safe
mode (hit F8 during boot up) and set the video to a low resolution.
It may also work to try and enter windows with last known good configuration.
The computer hangs or reboots after the Windows XP splash screen.
- Hit F8 during boot up and pick last known good configuration that
worked.
I think my hard drive is going bad, what should I do?
- Save any vital data on your network, an external drive, a cd, or
dvd.
- Find out what brand of hard drive you have and visit their website.
They will have a diagnostics program you can download and test your
hard drive to see if it is bad.
I am entering my Microsoft Key Code and some of the keys I need to use
do not work.
- The Microsoft key codes are written very small and
are sometimes hard to read. Only the keys that are used in MS key codes
are active during the key code entry. For example: an "0" may be mistaken for a "O" and
an "I" may be mistaken for a "1" or the other.
